Bad Honnef. |
As arranged I met Keith at the Mozart Hotel in the ‘music quarter” of Bonn. An area of classic architecture with turn of the century mansions lining the leafy streets. Not sure if they were genuine, as much of Bonn was destroyed in1944-45.
Our walk led us rapidly to the river and in brilliant warm sunshine we steadily made our way south on the west bank promenade. Each kilometre yielded its share of pleasant eating spots and handy park benches.
The terrain is rapidly becoming more hilly with steep riverside banks and narrow, yet attractive long one street towns squashed between hill and water. It’s pleasant change from the flatness further north, so ideal for the petro and chemical refineries.
One of the tricks with river walking, being rapidly learnt, is to determine on which side of the river the next port of call will be. Today, we had to back-track to the river ferry station for the 3 minute crossing at Konigswinter so as to arrive on the correct side of the river at our destination of Bad Honnef. Not anxious to add unnecessary kilometres to a full days walking.
A step ahead of me in terms of GPS technology, Keith smoothly guided us through the maze of narrow streets to the most pleasant & adequate youth hostel in Bad Honnef. En suite shower and a decent evening meal at the hostel restaurant rounded a good day.21.5 kms. walked today per Google maps.
