Small town city hall covered in solar panels. |
After a rather rowdy night at our small tourist hotel tucked away in the
bar & club district of the central city, I stepped out at 7.45 am into the
totally tranquil & deserted streets of Mannheim—deserted that is except for
the army of street cleaners polishing & scrubbing for the ‘German ‘ look.
Falling
back into reliance on more low tech reliance with things like sun position and
magnetic compass, after 12 days with brother in law Keith who strongly favours
I- Pod GPS, I vectored into a south east walking direction and set sail for
Heidelberg. Leaving Mannheim through its leafy suburbs, I did manage to circle
a massive ice hockey arena a couple of times! The helpful parents, escorting
little boys to their games, realizing that I was from Canada, were quick to
offer me their knowledgeable opinions as to who may take the NHL Stanley Cup in
2013.
Much
appreciated is that today’s walk was away from the massive factories and
refineries that are omnipresent in this part of Germany along rivers banks and
grouped outside most towns.
Leaving Mannheim, navigation for the day was basically as simple as
following the long distance street-car/tram track that reaches out as far as
Heidelberg. Approaching the city just after 12.30 pm, I took the first bridge
over the River Nechar, turned left past the zoo, to the new and totally
luxurious new youth hostel. Polar bears literally outside my bedroom window and I will be hearing them roar throughout the night. Just like being on safari in the Yukon.A day off from walking tomorrow, after 8 straight on the road, to spend a few hours wandering the streets of this attractive and historic city AND to do some shirt & sock washing! Fingers crossed for decent weather. Didn't some one once say that it always rains on mothers Monday wash day?
22 kms. walked today per Google Maps.
Cumulative kms. walked: 620.6
