A little beer helps the music go down. |
Awoke at a relaxing
8.00am and an enjoyable full breakfast in the Festung (fortress) youth hostel
in Koblenz. The most dramatic cliff top location, in a most interesting town that is
located at the confluence of the Rhine and Moselle rivers. Our hostel bedroom
is in the fortress basement with only two small windows located about 12 ft.
high in narrow slits that barely indicate to sleepers below if it is day or
night. However, the room is warm and dry and central heating is available at
the turn of a knob---especially welcomed as this rest day has also been washing
day. We have noted that in our room, the three ominous large steel hooks
embedded into the concrete ceiling. What were these hooks used for in these
youth hostel bedrooms that undoubtedly functioned as prison cells in years gone
by??
The visit
to Koblenz town today was also as the opportunity to re-tyre a couple of wheels
of my buggy. That minor buckling of the rims that occurred on the flight over
from Canada does seem to generate enough tire scuffing to grind them down every
200-250 kms., or couple of weeks of walking. That means perhaps 2 more tire
changes before walk end in Switzerland. Such is life. All other equipment, body
and equipment is functioning perfectly.
A
lively Saturday shopping scene on the network of pedestrian-only streets in the
centre of Koblenz, and were even treated to the repertoire of an ‘um-pa-pa’
band. Such was the enthusiasm from the
onlookers for the loud and raucous sounds that trays of beer were being
continually ferried out to the musicians from the nearby restaurants. For sure,
the crispness of the initial numbers deteriorated as the steins of beer began
to take effect! The tourists that we rarely saw during the week were numerous
today and widely evident in town, enjoying a sunny, cool early fall day.0 kms. walked today (rest day)
