Woke
at a relaxing 7.30am knowing that we only had an easy 15 kms to stroll along
the right hand Rhine River bank through the idyllic Lorelei section of the Rhine. Now
commencing the most dramatic and beautiful stretch of the river as featured in
travel brochures and tour guides.
Easy
day--- right? Wrong! Mother Nature and the patron saint of mechanical breakdowns
combined to make it an ‘interesting’ day. The warm prevailing wind from the
south brought heavy 10 minute down-pours perhaps half a dozen times during the
3 hour walk. No sooner were the rain capes on, than we were stowing them away
again. Not to complain though, this was only the second day with precipitation
since Amsterdam.
Approached Sint Goar at 12.15pm with lunch on our minds, when the buggy
suddenly veered to the left with a loud psssssssst. Flat tire! How did that
happen? New tyres, new inner tube, and a bullet proof tire inner lining to
prevent punctures. However a great opportunity to actually touch/feel for the
first time, the polluted water of the River Rhine as I scrambled down the bank to find
the offending puncture site using the old “bubble test”. Anyway, # 1 tyre
changing team quickly removed the offending casing and applied the patch. All
fixed very quickly and rolled to a halt at the local youth hostel an hour later, mercifully
high up the steep river side bank and above the frequent roar of rail
traffic on the omni-present tracks.
Relaxing afternoon preparing for a long day tomorrow on the road up
river/south to Bingen.15 kms. walked today per Google Maps.
450.0 Cumulative kms. walked.
